This is no easy puzzle, but I’ve mustered the courage to chase an answer—or at least offer a new perspective to those of you with endlessly curious minds.

So, let me ask you: Do you want to know the secret behind the most peaceful and joyful people on this planet?

If your answer is yes, let’s begin.

The “If” Trap

Pause for a moment and think: How often do your thoughts start with “if”?

  • If I had a fit body, I’d deserve attention.
  • If I had more money, I’d deserve respect.

This kind of thinking traps us in a cycle where happiness is always just out of reach, tied to some future achievement or external factor. It’s like chasing a horizon that moves away as we step closer.

Now, consider the power of sentences that start with “despite.”

  • Despite my toxic environment, I’m excited to create a new reality.
  • Despite my finances, I’m grateful for the possibilities ahead.

Do you feel the shift? One mindset limits us; the other empowers us. One keeps us stuck; the other sparks resilience.

After years of living in the “if” spectrum and observing people thriving in the “despite” spectrum, I’ve realized that no matter the odds, we always have a choice.

Our ability to cultivate these batteries is often influenced by cultural frameworks. Let’s explore how different cultures shape our capacity for joy.

Western cultures often celebrate directness and emotional expression. Feeling happy? Shout it from the rooftops. This value system tends to emphasize individual autonomy and heightened emotions. But on the flip side, it can sometimes veer toward a pursuit of happiness that feels performative or superficial, tied to material success and external validation.

Eastern cultures, in contrast, often prioritize collective harmony and emotional restraint. In many Eastern traditions, openly expressing happiness or focusing too much on personal joy may be seen as undignified or even selfish. Instead, the emphasis is on balance, humility, and consideration for the group.

Having been deeply exposed to both perspectives, I’ve wrestled with these dualities.

For years, I felt guilt for my loud, expressive lifestyle, as if my joy needed to be toned down to align with collective values. Yet, I’ve also seen the beauty of moral discernment—the way it fosters deep empathy and strengthens communal bonds through intentional choices and mindful actions.

Neither approach is inherently right or wrong. Instead, the sweet spot lies in integrating the strengths of both. The battery of sustainable happiness requires both the Western drive for self-expression and the Eastern wisdom of balance.

Between the demands of work, life, and the never-ending cycle of bills, we often put our development, learning, and self-improvement at the bottom of our daily to-do lists.

When I was younger, I typically justified this in two primary ways:

  1. Lack of Control – I believed I didn’t have a choice. Things were beyond my control. Excuses like “I’m just so busy,” “My boss is unfair,” or “I’m just not as fast as my colleagues” were my go-to justifications.
  2. Fear – I was afraid of not being next in line for a promotion, of not getting my next raise, of not being enough. Although I never missed a promotion, I wasn’t exactly the healthiest individual. Years later, burnt out, overworked, and with no sense of who I was outside of work, I collapsed.

It took years (and thousands spent in therapy) to realize both excuses stemmed from the same place—a deep-rooted insecurity.

Self-Worth & Work

Unbeknownst to me at the time, my self-worth was directly tied to my job. My value depended on what my boss thought, how hard they saw me working, and how much time I spent in the office (this was clearly before COVID).

As I’m sure anyone in a similar situation can attest, I allowed the allure of winning to eclipse everything else in my life including myself.

For those who are good at it, business is fun. Winning contracts, pursuing leads, figuring out a new code base, it’s all exhilarating! But that excitement wasn’t enough to compensate for everything else I was losing.

In the grand scheme of a universe that’s at least 13.8 billion years old (and likely older), it’s silly to think anyone including your boss, can dictate your self-worth or justify your existence.

Think about it. For all the great philosophical minds that have come before us—Jesus, Buddha, Mohammad, Confucius, the ancient Greeks—no one can definitively explain why we are here, as a species or as individuals.

Before You Freak Out

Years ago, this uncertainty would have terrified me. The not knowing used to bring anxiety.

Now? I’ve realized it’s one of the best parts of life: No one can tell me or you why we are here. Which means we get to figure it out for ourselves—if we choose to.

Most of us got to where we are today by doing what we were supposed to. By following the rules.

But in doing so, we likely left pieces of ourselves behind. Pieces we miss even if we don’t realize it yet.

The good news? You can start rediscovering those pieces today by setting aside time to learn something new.

30 Minutes of Mastery

Taking just 30 minutes a day to learn something new improved my mental health, sharpened my skills, and, most importantly, helped me find myself again.

Here’s how you can do the same:

Step 1: Identify Your Peak Time

Find the time of day when you’re at your sharpest, most alert, and most capable.

  • For most, this is an hour or two after waking up.
  • Others hit their peak right after lunch.
  • Observe yourself for a few weeks. Track your energy levels throughout the day in a journal. Your peak time will naturally reveal itself.

Step 2: Block 30 Minutes for Learning

Once you’ve found your peak time:

  • Block 30 minutes of it on your calendar every day.
  • Only schedule a week at a time to allow flexibility for unexpected changes.
  • Set a recurring meeting with yourself—just like you would for an important client or project.

Step 3: Show Up & Protect Your Time

This is the hard part.

  • Show up every day (at least three times a week, minimum).
  • Don’t let distractions cancel your session.
  • Don’t use holidays or busy schedules as excuses.
  • Don’t waste this time responding to emails or texts.

Instead, use it to learn something meaningful, robotics, graphic design, mindfulness, coding, creativity, whatever calls to you. Trust your intuition.

Step 4: Observe & Adjust

As Annie Dillard said, “How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives.”

By prioritizing yourself and daily learning, you’re making an investment that will pay dividends for you, your career, and society as a whole.

After all, if we’ve all left pieces of ourselves behind along the way, maybe it’s no wonder that life isn’t as fulfilling as it could be.

What Real Hope Is

Real hope is actionable, practical, and realistic. Better yet, it’s feasible and can be learned.

One popular approach is Hope Theory. This concept is used by colleges to study how hope impacts students’ academic performance. Researchers found that students with high levels of hope achieve better grades and are more likely to graduate compared to those with less hope.

Hope can be broken down into two components:

  1. Pathways – The “how to” of hope. This is where people think of and establish plans for achieving their goals.
  2. Agency – The “I can” of hope. This is the belief that the person can accomplish their goals.

Does Hope Really Work?

According to Webster’s Dictionary, hope as a noun is defined as: “desire accompanied by expectation of or belief in fulfillment.”

As humans, we are wired to crave fulfillment. We have the ability to envision it and, through hope, make it a reality.

My Experience with Hope

For 13 years, I was a hopeless human. During my time working at a luxury hotel as a front desk agent earning $11.42 per hour, I felt the sting of hopelessness the most.

The regret of feeling my time was being stolen from me lingered every time I clocked in. Eventually, I decided to do something about it.

I gave myself permission to hope for something better. I began establishing pathways to success and regained agency by learning from self-help books and seeking mentorship.

Because I took action toward something I desired, I now feel more hope and joy than I ever felt hopelessness. Hope changed me.

Hope Actually Improves Your Life

Wishful thinking doesn’t work, and false hope is equally ineffective. Real hope, however, is directly tied to success in all areas of life.

Thoughts from 14,000 Ft—How A Quarter Life Crisis Starts

I’m high in the Andes somewhere in Ecuador. Everything has a yellow tint to it—the mountains, vegetation, even the Andean animals.

It’s foggy, rainy, and fucking frigid. I’m drenched, freezing my ass off, and have fallen in the mud multiple times—and I’m having the time of my life.

It was December of 2021, and I’d never had this much fun or felt this free—certainly not in my five years of helping a large oil and gas company generate profits.

Back at the hostel, warm and surrounded by people and mountain dogs, the most common question was—”how long you in Ecuador for?”

Seemingly everyone responded with something like “ah, I’m traveling this entire continent, I’ve been at it for nine months.” Six months here, four there, another guy doing a year.

It was my turn to answer.

“Uh, five… days.”

I was cramming everything Ecuador had to offer into one week before I had to be back to my job in the US. The standard approach for los gringos.

If these European, Israeli, and Asian cats could scrape together the change and take the plunge into long-term travel, why couldn’t I?

Dedicating all of my life energy, mental capacity, and focus to pushing the agenda of Big Oil, and expending any leftovers on getting drunk to escape it, I was void of anything resembling exploration, purpose, and wander.

I was sitting on a mountain of cash from not doing shit while making a healthy oil salary. Money wasn’t the issue—fear of letting go was.

Little did I know, I’d just planted to seed that would grow into a fully blossomed, standard set of stages of a quarter life crisis.

Only later, after I’d clawed my way out of the final stage, would I realize how closely my journey matched this framework.

According to a LinkedIn study, 75% of 25- to 33-year-olds have experienced a quarter-life crisis, so you’re not alone if you feel this way (stressed, numb, depressed, lonely, purposeless, withdrawal, restlessness, aimless).

The Quarter Life Crisis In Stages

Stage 1: Trapped

I wake up. I drive to work. I work. I drive home. Pick up my dry-cleaning. Work out in to stay ‘healthy.’ Listen to a podcast. Cook. Shower. Sleep. Repeat.

“We do this for two years and then say—is this life?”

Dr. K, an expert on mental health and personal growth, describes this stage as trapped: the suffocating monotony of a life on autopilot.

My job gave me lots of approval from family and friends. They’d pat me on the back and say “you did it!”

Like many, I’d exited college hungry to touch a real check.

The checks were big, especially compared to my ramen-and-40s diet in college.

Yet, the novel money and lifestyle lose their shine over time, and things like purpose, passion, and a great life take the drivers seat.

Life became a predictable script. Grind all week, blow off steam on the weekend to escape.

For many, the script is tolerable—until it isn’t. The shift is subtle at first: a nagging voice asking, “Is this it?” But over time, the voice grows louder, pushing you toward a breaking point.

Stage 2: Checking Out

I’m over this shit.

Pointless meetings. Incompetent managers. Coworkers whose lives are terrifyingly similar to the one I’m hurtling toward. Except you, Will—you’re a real one.

At this stage, the mental break happens. You’re done. But physically, you’re still showing up.

This is a critical point in the overall process, and as Dr. K points out, it is a common, major mistake to try to check back in.

This is where many people stay stuck, forever fantasizing about what could be but never making a move. We tell ourselves, “It’s not so bad. I should be grateful. $100k a year isn’t nothing.”

That internal justification keeps us trudging forward, but the emptiness only deepens.

For months, I toyed with the idea of leaving it all behind. I’d sit at my desk and daydream about trekking solo through South America with just a backpack and a burner phone. At first, it felt like just that—a fantasy.

Most people stop here and remain for decades. Paralyzed by fear, inertia, and the illusion of safety.

But some of us—driven by an unrelenting dissatisfaction—reach a breaking point.

Stage 3: Separation

“You need space—psychological and physical—to get away from what you’re checked out from.”

The daydreams of South America turned into plans. Budgets. Timelines. A fear-setting exercise sealed the deal.

I timed it perfectly: my annual bonus would hit in April, my lease would end in May, and I’d resign in June. A week later, I’d be on a plane to Mexico.

And just like that, it was real. I landed in León with a black duffel bag slung over my shoulder and a buzzcut, looking exactly as sketchy as I’d intended.

I’d spend a month in Mexico, and then roughly one month per country in Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil for a total of six months of lone backpacking. [I didn’t make it to Brazil.]

This stage isn’t glamorous. It’s gritty, uncomfortable, and lonely at times. But that’s the point. Only by stepping away from what’s familiar can we create space for something new.

Stage 4: Exploration

Town after town. Mountain after mountain. Long, solo bus rides. Conversations with locals and fellow travelers. No Microsoft Teams pings, no meetings, no deadlines.

I was alive again.

But the real exploration wasn’t just of landscapes or cultures. It was of myself.

Spending extended time alone and learning to rely on yourself to make it home each night in foreign, at-times-sketchy places, teaches you about yourself.

What do I enjoy when no one’s watching? What do I value? What am I willing to tolerate? What brings me joy? What kind of life do I want to build?

When the noise of a high-stakes job, social obligations, and city living is stripped away, the signal becomes clear. In that clarity, I began redefining who I was.

Dr. K says, “Purpose isn’t discovered; it’s crafted.” And during those months, I was quietly building a blueprint.

Stage 5: Rebuilding

By the final months of my trip, my journal was full of plans for the life I wanted to create.

“I’ll join a men’s group. Train Muay Thai. Go to bachata socials. Take Spanish classes. Mentor a kid through Big Brothers Big Sisters. Start my own business.”

When I returned home, I did all of it—and more.

I’d built a new life, and arguably, a new me. I wasn’t the same timid, burnt-out corporate drone who’d left. I’d faced fears, dismantled insecurities, and proven to myself that I could craft a life worth living.

It sounds glamorous, but trust me—it was earned. Every skill, every connection, every moment of joy was a direct result of the painful work done in those earlier stages.

The Reframe

If you’re feeling trapped or checked out, you’re not failing. You’re waking up. A quarter-life crisis isn’t a sign you’ve lost your way; it’s a sign you’re fighting for a life that’s truly yours.

The fact that you’re questioning things means you care. And that’s the first step toward building something real.

Few people have the habit of hoarding their wealth without spending.  However, it limits their motivation as they tend to get into their comfort zones.  When people start spending money, then there will be depletion in their coffers.

As a result, they can think of several ways and means to generate income.  It leads to creativity and innovation as people step into their effective zones.  Therefore, you need to empty your pocket first in order to fill it.  

Few people think that recession is a threat.  But when viewed logically, recession is an opportunity to grow as people get into effective zones who until then stayed in their comfort zones as things were sailing smoothly.   

Many inventions and business empires emerged at the time of recession as necessity is the mother of invention.  The human mind works smarter when there is a need and it motivates people to move forward relentlessly until it gets results.

Teaching and Research

Tim was a researcher.  He amassed a huge wealth of knowledge through research and consultancy.  What is the use of acquiring knowledge unless you put it to use by sharing?  He went on teaching the acquired knowledge.  

Students were excited and also the teacher as the latter derived a lot of pleasure in sharing knowledge with students. Besides, students posed several questions and which served as fresh triggers for exploration.  

After returning from teaching, Tim explored the triggers and was exposed to those areas as well and again went back to the classroom to teach in those areas.  

Likewise, both Tim and the students enjoyed the teaching sessions as they were adding value to each other.  That is why it is rightly said that teaching and research reinforce each other.

Students appreciate the teachers who are dedicated and passionate.  They admire teachers especially when they are filled with tons of knowledge. 
More than the parents, it is the teachers who can influence and impact their students as students spend a lot of time in educational institutions.  

When parents tell the same, the children will not receive the way they receive from teachers as parents are treated as parents and teachers as teachers.  

Therefore, the teachers need to empty their cups and refill them constantly to get intellectual stimulation and satisfaction.

Knowledge Grows When Shared

The river has to flow.  If it does not flow, it stagnates and stinks.  Similarly, knowledge has to be shared not to be hoarded.  A few people think that sharing knowledge will help others to grow.  

There is excitement in seeing others grow.  There is a thrill when your knowledge is put into use by others.  And don’t expect any returns or credit for sharing.  

Even if you are not credited you get a lot of internal satisfaction which is far higher than millions of people applauding you externally.

When we look at fruit and root, it is the root that gives the fruit.  Can Root eat the fruit?  Of course, not.  

Similarly, you may not get credit for everything you share.  But your stature grows when someone grows out of your intellectual input.  Indeed there is great satisfaction and joy in sharing rather than hoarding knowledge. 

Don’t get paralyzed by ego as it is the culprit of sharing knowledge.

Let your ego not overflow. It leads to jealousy and conflicts. Free your mind and heart from ego.  You will become taller. Emptying your cup removes your ego and enhances humility.  

At the same time, keep your mind free for some time daily to be more creative.  If you are engaged in work round the clock you will be less creative as you don’t give any break to your mind.

Secrets for Success

Why only a few people are successful, not all?  It is basically because they empty their cup constantly and refill them continuously.  They open their minds and hearts.  They are flexible and accommodative. 

For instance, if you follow the same strategy toward success it becomes obsolete over some time.  No strategy works permanently for a specific situation.  You need to change your strategies and secrets constantly which are possible only by refilling your cup.   

How can you refill once you are already full in your cup?  Therefore, give a space to accommodate several new things in your mind.

A Take-Home Message

The heart purifies blood continuously.  We inhale and exhale replacing bad air with good air.  Man is born and dead.  It is a cycle process.  

Similarly, the cup needs to be emptied and filled as it is an inherent part of human nature.  When you empty your cup, you reinvent yourself.  

You shed your old habits and wed new habits that are relevant and currently beneficial.  

Therefore, stop hoarding and start sharing your knowledge and wealth for the benefit of humankind.

“It’s never enough.”

I’ve been hearing that phrase more and more from my clients these days. They’re successful, driven people. They’ve had a clear path in life, dedicating themselves to their career, their business, or a sport. 

Each and every one of them reaches goal after goal, hitting higher and higher levels of achievement each time.

Yet, it seems like it’s never enough; they feel the need to go further, reach higher. They start comparing themselves not to their peers, but to those further along in their career. They are always looking up the ladder, never able to appreciate how much they’ve achieved. 

All this leaves them in an uncomfortable position – they can’t ever enjoy their success. Taking time away from their career or business becomes a terrifying prospect, worried they may fall behind. 

They have a hard time taking vacations, always on their phone and checking their email when they should be enjoying the beach. Their health suffers, their relationships suffer. It seems as though chasing goal after goal is all that matters in life.

The Batman Syndrome

What I’ve found in almost all cases is that each one has a “Batman Origin Story,” an intolerable situation growing up, whether living in a chaotic household, lacking financial or other resources, or just being different and never able to connect.

At some point, they developed a talent that gave them a way out, – sports perhaps, or entrepreneurship, or a skill that got them a good career. They dragged themselves out of a dire situation and have been running from it ever since.

Billionaire entrepreneur Andrew Wilkinson wrote about this dynamic in his recent book, “Never Enough.” Andrew grew up in a relatively poor family, where money was a constant source of stress and conflict. 

He reasoned that if he could make enough money, that would solve all those problems. He worked his way up from being a barista making $6 per hour to becoming a billionaire, but that stress and anxiety he felt never went away. 

More than that, he saw the same issues in his peers making 10s to 100s of millions of dollars per year. 

Alex Hormozi, another successful entrepreneur whose portfolio of companies make over $500 million per year in revenue, often talks about building a stack of “undeniable proof” that you are who you say you are. Somehow, that stack is still never big enough.

It’s About Measuring Up

Why does this happen? The key to finding “enough” is recognizing that the root of the problem is a question of self-esteem and deservedness.

To counteract feeling like we’re not good enough –to prove to ourselves that we do deserve things, that we are valued – we find something we’re good at and get to work honing our skill. We set goals to measure our progress and work hard to reach them. 

Unfortunately, that feeling never goes away. No amount of success seems enough. We keep moving the goalposts, however, if the target keeps moving, there’s no way to ever reach the end. No way to win that game.

Key Steps to Finding Self-Worth

We need to find a different way to measure up, to be deserving, without relying on external measures. Here’s how.

  1. Recognize that your past environment isn’t a reflection of you. When we can’t get what we need growing up, it’s not about what we deserve. It’s about what was available in our environment, whether that’s love and support, money, or something else entirely. We’re dependent on our parents to provide those things, and often they’re just not equipped to do so. Nothing we could have done would have changed that. It’s not about us.
  2. It’s up to us to decide our value and what we deserve. Who chooses the goals we are chasing? Who chose how to measure our success? Who decides which opinions about us we’ll pay attention to? The answer is we decide. Even when we allow others to judge us and our worth, it’s still us making that decision. Others cannot decide what we deserve, only what they’ll give us.
  3. Contrary to popular belief, self-esteem and self-worth do not come from accomplishments. Stop measuring your value by past circumstances and beliefs and make the choice to live your life based on who you truly are, not the victim of your past.

Psychology talks about having an internal or external locus of control. By chasing goals and external measures of worth, we’re placing control of our lives outside of ourselves. 

By taking that power back into our hands, by making our worth and deservedness a choice we make, we take back control of our lives.

If you learn to track these thoughts and chase them away because they have nothing to back them up, they are not true, and you will find it much easier to live because these thoughts will no longer sit so deeply in you and interfere with you in the form of fear, anxiety, insecurity. 

You will immediately feel more energy and freedom inside.

2. Cognitive Restructuring: Challenge and Replace Negative Thoughts

When you have identified negative thoughts, it’s time to learn to question their validity and replace them with new, beneficial thoughts.

  • Can anything prove that this is not just a negative thought but the truth?
  • If your friend had such a thought, what would you advise and say to them about it?
  • Is it possible to look at the thought positively? Instead of saying, “I won’t achieve anything,” start saying, “I have everything to learn and succeed,” or “Thanks to my efforts, success will come to me 100% in time” because it’s logical. Action, effort, and patience will give more results than inaction and self-bashing.

The main thing is consistency. Even if it seems that it does not work, keep noticing negative thoughts and try to change them to more positive ones. Admit to yourself that you are not the image your fears try to impose on you. Over time, it will become a habit.

Visualization is great for building new neural connections. Imagining that you have achieved your goal is very motivating and energizing. Every morning and evening, write down what you are grateful for (at least three items). Over time, you will more often feel gratitude and happiness instead of negativity, anxiety, and sadness.

Introducing beneficial and initially uncomfortable new habits is the perfect way to train your brain. It will resist, but you need to stick with it for 21 days until the habit is formed.

Let’s say you want to learn how to manage your time correctly. Try setting your alarm 10 minutes earlier, write down your tasks for the day, and get to work on them. During your breaks, listen to books or podcasts on time management. 

Once you get used to at least just making a to-do list and sticking to it, you can implement the new habits you learn.

7. Power of Adding “Yet” to Negative Thoughts

Adding “yet” to any negative phrase leaves room for faith, positivity, development, and growth. You deceive your brain and show it that you are on your way. Everything is not bad and impossible; you haven’t achieved something yet, but you will.

Uncertainty. We’ve heard that word a lot in the last few years. However, we have also seen that in nearly every uncertain period, resilience has manifested. Change is a constant part of our day-to-day lives. 

Some would argue that it’s the only thing we can accurately predict. In my experience which has spanned more than three decades in wealth management, I have seen market volatility come and go – and it is expected. 

The cycles are familiar—the economy expands and contracts and the markets rise and fall, and often our emotions get caught in the waves of change.

According to Schwab, market cycles vary in length. They’ve shared:

A bull market is a long-term uptrend marked by optimism and a robust economy. By contrast, a bear market is a prolonged downtrend, usually marked by declines of 20% from recent highs, accompanied by widespread negative sentiment. The record bull run in U.S. stocks, which began in early 2009 and ended in March 2020, is a recent example of a long-term market cycle.

Long-term cycles can also include several shorter cycles. For example, within a long-term cycle, there might be short-term sell-offs that didn’t turn into bear markets or periods of largely sideways price movement. As illustrated in the chart below, investors can reference a monthly chart of a benchmark like the S&P 500® index (SPX) for the past 20 years to identify previous long-term market cycles.

Throughout the years from cycle to cycle, I have said to clients, friends, peers, and beyond – get focused, not emotional. Learning to master your emotions can allow you to become a better investor because instead of making reactive choices, you can make intentional choices.

Here are 10 steps to manage the emotional flair that can occur when change rears its ugly head. These steps can pave the way for sound investment decisions while helping you maintain your overall well-being.

  1. Understand the Need to Evaluate Your Plan: Revisit your investment strategy based on your goals, risk tolerance, and time horizon. Review the guidelines you have in place for how to react to market fluctuations based on your individual scenario.
  2. Be On a Need-to-Know Basis: Keep up with market news, but don’t let it dominate your thoughts. Aim for a balanced view by consuming information from reputable sources without getting caught up in sensational headlines. Headlines sell but they are often a lot of hype to get views and clicks.
  3. Practice Mindfulness: Techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or yoga can help you stay grounded and manage stress. Mindfulness can help you observe your emotions without letting them dictate your actions.
  4. Diversification: This can help mitigate risk while opening the doors of opportunity. Diversification can provide a cushion against market volatility that may result in a more stable overall return.
  5. Focus on Long-Term Goals: Keep your long-term goals in mind to avoid making impulsive decisions based on short-term market movements. Reactive decisions very rarely yield favorable results.
  6. Respond with Intention and Not Impulse: A knee-jerk reaction often doesn’t consider the whole picture. Instead, assess the situation from a 360-degree perspective, and consider whether any action is necessary based on your strategy.
  7. Communicate with Your Advisor: Connect with your trusted advisor to get an objective perspective on your investments and ensure that your strategy still aligns with your goals.
  8. Manage Expectations: Understand that market volatility is normal and that investing involves risk. Set realistic expectations for returns and be prepared for ups and downs. It’s all a part of the process.
  9. Acknowledge Your Stress and Address it: A healthy lifestyle supports emotional resilience. Taking the time to get in a good workout, ensuring you are getting enough quality sleep, and making nutritious food choices can fuel you during times of heightened stress. Recognizing you are under stress if the first step in preparing to address it effectively.
  10. Reflect on Past Experiences: Think about how you’ve reacted to past market volatility and whether those reactions were beneficial. Learn from past experiences to improve your response in the future.

We may not be able to control what happens to us in life, but we can always control how we respond to things. The key is to respond – not react. Reacting is an emotional response to a situation that’s often impulsive and can be influenced by our past experiences or fears.

  • Week 5: Plan your studio’s layout and hire contractors for any plumbing, electrical, etc. issues.
  • Week 6: Begin renovations .
  • Week 7: Prepare all licensing and legal compliance paperwork.
  • Week 8: Get your business licenses and schedule a health inspection with the local health department.
  • Week 9: Interview and hire tattoo artists and someone to work the front desk.
  • Week 10: Develop and execute a marketing plan.
  • Week 11: Prepare for your Grand Opening and generate buzz with ads and social media posts.

You would then further break down each of these weekly goals into small steps so you know what to do each day of the week to achieve that week’s objective.  

By breaking down the goal into these detailed, time-specific tasks, you can manage each step effectively, making the daunting task of opening a new studio feel more doable. 

Tracking Progress, Accountability, and Learning from Each Cycle

Regularly reviewing progress—daily, weekly, and at the end of each 12-week period—helps make sure you stay on track and can make changes to your plan, when necessary. Using progress charts or digital trackers can also make it easier to stay motivated as you work at a quick pace. 

Also, having an accountability partner or joining a peer group can also help keep your motivation up.

If you do a “12 Week Year” multiple times, it’s important to review each “year” when you’re done. That way, you can figure out what worked, what didn’t, and how you can improve moving forward. 

Learning from each cycle helps you make continuous improvement so that every 12-week period is more productive than the last one.

Rising in any career — as well as in life — takes determination, perseverance and adaptability. And It’s generally best if you can remain grounded in humility and gratitude, acknowledging the opportunities that have come your way. 

It also takes resilience and courage: the courage to turn the wheel and embrace life’s myriad twists and turns. When I reflect back on my own career, I often think about the advice I took to heart, such as from the motivational speaker Zig Ziglar

He said just get started in any direction, and once moving, then it is easy to turn that wheel in the right direction. 

Here are 7 proven strategies that helped keep me moving throughout my career and rising to the top. I am confident that they can help you as well:

1. Never place a lid on your own thinking

If you’re familiar with Zig Ziglar you may know about his flea parable. As the parable goes, when the flea trainers placed fleas in a jar and left the top off, the fleas jumped up and out endlessly, escaping the jar. 

Once they covered the jar with a lid, the fleas jumped high, hitting the lid over and over creating a limitation they learned they couldn’t overcome. 

After time, once the trainers took the lid back off, the fleas could not jump out. The limitation was now set in their mind, even if it was no longer there in reality.

2. Don’t expect a seamless career

My Dad sold insurance, and as a boy I sometimes followed him door to door. I know there were times when he wanted to just go home. But he needed to keep going, and he did. That was my introduction to the world of business. 

As I embarked on my own career, I made sure I wasn’t just doing what I wanted, but what I needed to do. It may not have been as well-planned or seamless as I’d hoped, but the truth is, no career is. 

You’ll be given opportunities — and it’s up to you to recognize them, conventional or not, and take full advantage of them.

3. Stay on a forward path

I’d already visited and worked in the United States but hadn’t yet decided to settle here. I was still a young man when I received a prestigious scholarship from British Leyland Motor Corporation (BLMC) — manufacturer of iconic brands like Austin, Jaguar, Morris, MG, Triumph and Rover. 

In my position there, I got the chance to experience work at almost every level of the company, from the production line to sitting in on senior management meetings. 

But I saw how even this impressive brand and leadership team couldn’t surmount the broader fault lines in British society at the time. The company was crippled by confrontational labor relations, and I knew there were no easy fixes. 

Instead, I decided that to keep moving forward in my career, I had to make the move to America. I never looked back.

4. Find your niche

I realized I loved the sports world — I had played semi-professional football (soccer) for Oxford City Football Club when I was still in England. I also loved helping organizations grow. 

So, I combined them into my own niche, focusing on revenue generation and fan community building for start-ups and turn-around situations, and helping sports organizations refocus, build and drive — on the field, court and ice. 

That included the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Colorado Rockies, the Denver Grizzlies, the University of Denver athletics department, the National Basketball Association, and the Atlanta Hawks, Atlanta Thrashers and Philips Arena.

5. Keep growing

When I founded my sports marketing firm, The Aspire Group, I acted first as CEO, and later as Chairman. I knew I wanted it to keep growing and all my decisions were based on that objective. 

Aspire became one of the leading outsourced revenue-generating firms globally in the space and generated more than $125 million in new and enhanced client revenues per year, and over $1.75 Billion for our over 300 iconic clients globally. 

When I sold Aspire to Playfly Sports in May 2023, I knew it was the best way to keep Aspire growing, since Playfly is the fastest growing company in sports multimedia rights, marketing and technology.

6. Seize challenges as opportunities

This is a simple one, but it’s an important mindset shift. If you have a goal or a dream, go for it. For instance, if you want to rise in the corporate world, you need to be willing to climb the ladder, no matter how slippery it might be. 

When you face a challenge, see it as an opportunity, and go for it.

7. Just turn the wheel

Back to Zig Ziglar, whose wisdom taught me so much. To move forward takes change. Sometimes you are going to have to turn the wheel, even when there is no momentum. 

Being able to decide on the direction you must take does not have to be the starting point. If you cannot decide, just start anywhere — you’ll be able to adjust to the right direction once you’re moving. 

There are always consequences for every action, and every inaction. But with that initial action, that first step, even if it is not in the exact right direction, it is often the key to success.

I’m at the stage where I’ve shifted my focus from growing a career to making a difference. But I’m able to bring the lessons learned over time to this new endeavor, and I’m able to make a difference because I have the track record and success to propel me forward. 

That’s the bonus to guiding your own career with care. Once you acknowledge that you are ready, then you can use your experience, power, and confidence to help others as well.

People talk within themselves throughout the waking time which is known as internal conversation, internal monologue, self-talk, inner speech, inner discourse, or internal discourse. It is quite natural and normal. 

However, some people argue in their heads which leads to internal conflict, anxiety, and depression. Most challenges in individuals arise due to the arguments within their minds. 

When people feed their minds with negative information they evolve as negative individuals whereas when people feed their minds with positive information they evolve as positive individuals. 

Don’t Waste Your Precious Mental Time

When you argue in your head, you poison your mind and waste your precious time. It may have adverse effects on the people around you. People often think that wasting time is physical. It is mental as well. 

People waste more of their mental time and less physical time in their lives. When you think about negative people and unpleasant events from the past excessively you waste your precious time mentally. 

Research shows that people waste 30 percent of their time thinking about their unpleasant past that cannot be changed. 

So, learn to live in the present without thinking about your unpleasant past and worrying about the future. Feed your mind with positive thoughts and work constructively and creatively to achieve success.

Avoid Becoming A Chronic Overthinker 

Overcome the paralysis of analysis. Avoid thinking as follows: I wish I succeeded as an entrepreneur. I wish I was born into a healthy family. I wish I had a regular education. I wish I had education from eminent educational institutions. I wish I had a mentor or coach in my early life to become successful. 

Avoid irrational imaginative internal arguments. Be realistic and practical. Be positive and confident. See the light in you to lead your life with peace and happiness.

Avoid Imaginary Irrational Arguments In Your Head

Here are some tips to avoid arguing in your head. Don’t take unhealthy criticism personally. Be thick-skinned. Avoid the individuals who enjoy arguing with others. Don’t react to them. Ignore them. 

Act positively. Detach from negative individuals and attach to positive individuals. Have self-awareness. Understand the power of internal monologue and leverage it constructively. Write down the journal. 

For instance, whenever there is an issue or conflict in my mind, I write it down. It serves as a therapy. I get relief and a solution for it. 

Additionally, I unlock the power of my subconscious mind to find solutions for problems and resolve conflicts effectively.

Rehearsing Arguments Is A Double-Edged Sword

Research shows that rehearsing arguments in your mind ends up causing more harm than good leading to mental illness and damaging your body. It adversely affects your mind and body. 

However, litigation lawyers often rehearse a lot mentally before they actually argue in the courts. Before writing an article or research paper, I play out the whole scenario. 

Before uploading a video on my YouTube channel, I play out the whole scenario. Before I attend an interview podcast or webinar as a guest, I play out the whole scenario. 

It helps me contribute my best as I anticipate probable questions and rehearse my answers. So, playing out the whole scenario is a double-edged sword. It all depends on how you use your mind and subconscious mind.

Master Your Mind To Lead Your Life Mindfully

Avoid war in your head. Remember that the internal enemy is more dangerous than the external enemy. So, avoid your internal arguments to check your internal enemy. 

Calm down your irrational argumentative mind to lead your life mindfully and meaningfully. Your mind is a masterpiece. You can use it either for constructive or destructive activities. It is under your control. Don’t make a mess of it. Use it constructively to build a better world. 

To summarize, use the power of the subconscious mind positively to stop arguing in your head to excel as a positive individual and perceive others positively. You can talk great things with others and inspire them. 

Remember, you are what you feed your mind. So feed your mind positively to excel as a healthy individual.

When we want to make others feel important, we shift the focus from ourselves to them. This means truly listening to their thoughts and feelings, acknowledging their contributions, and offering genuine compliments. 

We can also show we value them by remembering details about their lives and interests, offering help when needed, and simply being present and engaged in conversations. 

These acts of consideration show them they are seen, heard, and appreciated for who they are.

People often look to elevate themselves rather than others by focusing on their strengths and merits. It is unfortunate to note. 

People have become so busy that they don’t find time to care for others. The world has become ruthless with cutthroat competition. It is a rat race where no one cares about others. That is the current scenario globally.

God blessed us with life. If everyone thinks of contributing something to others by whatever means most of the problems will be resolved and people feel better, bigger and greater. 

However, very few people have the time to think along those lines as they don’t find to think through. They are used to routine activities as the way most people don’t breathe even properly due to high stress levels. 

Where will the world go? Who will save the world and the people? It is time to think through and do something for others to make a difference.

Make a habit of spending some time daily to listen to people and empathize with them. It comforts them. 

If possible, observe people around you, say a few good things, and motivate them. Who knows? The man whom you motivate might be on the brink of disaster.

When you want to make someone feel important, it is essential to show genuine interest in their thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Take the time to actively listen to them and validate their perspectives. 

Use their name to personalize your interactions and make them feel seen and valued.

Remember, the key is to be authentic and sincere in your interactions, as people can often sense when someone is being insincere or trying to manipulate them.

Attachment styles are a popular framework used by many in this day and age, but what is your “attachment style” exactly?

Your attachment style refers to the way you formed close, long-term bonds with first your mother and father and then other humans later in life. 

If you had caregivers that were reliable and responsive to your needs most of the time, you were essentially given the privilege of what is called a “secure attachment”.

You would then grow up to be able to approach your relationships with that same responsiveness, security and warmth you were given as a baby. 

A secure attachment style is a valuable resource when it comes to success in all areas of life. When you’re securely attached, you have stronger footing and a larger “emotional bank” to draw from in every challenge that is thrown your way in relationships or business.

Simply put, you have greater resilience to “bounce back” from any challenge that’s thrown your way in relationships, business and health. 

But what if you weren’t lucky enough to be given the gift of a secure attachment style?

What if, like 40% of the population, you have what is called an insecure attachment style?

That emotional risk requires comfort with vulnerability and the ability to regulate your emotions, which insecurely attached people struggle with.

Or the willingness to spend money testing new avenues for acquiring customers and to observe the results of these tests with conscientiousness. 

These types of healthy risks are essential to one’s success and ability to create an infinite life. 

As an individual with insecure attachment, you won’t have the certainty and stability within yourself that is needed for you to feel safe to go out there in the world and take the big steps you need to take.

Give back to yourself the stability and reliable nurturing that wasn’t given to you as an infant.

#2: It Will Be harder to Form Quality Relationships With People

The value of human relationships lies in the mutual connection you both feel.

Unfortunately, insecurely attached people are not only uncomfortable with intimacy, they tend to see it as unsafe.

That is to say that if you have insecure attachment, you likely don’t trust intimacy, relationships or people very easily. 

In fact it will be a struggle for you to value connection and intimacy.

As such, you will be in danger of sabotaging your relationships and the quality of each of your relationships will also be lower.

In the context of business and your career, you may be more likely to be ostracized from your colleagues or not be able to be attuned to your bosses requests, leading to quicker isolation and less likelihood of a promotion in the workplace.

All of this leads to lower life satisfaction and less success, because the quality of your life is in direct proportion to the quality of the relationships you build.

If you’re avoidant, you shut your attachment system down altogether and become completely unable to be present during key moments during conflicts in your working relationships.

What this amounts to is a quicker death to any relationships you have, due to you being unable to be emotionally and physically present during conflict.

If you’re anxious, you might also escalate conflicts too fast and completely sabotage your relationships, losing your partner’s trust in an instant.

How do you fix this?

If you’re anxiously attached, learn to recognize your triggers.

Consciously notice the stress in your body escalating, and literally take a deep breath.

Make it audible and visible if you need to, there’s no need to fear judgement.

Simply allow yourself a moment to de-escalate your own stress and then come back to the conflict with a newfound presence.

To ensure that your insecure attachment patterns never hold you back in life again, you must employ reliable anchors to help bring you back to a state of trusting connection.

Because it doesn’t matter whether you have avoidant, anxious or disorganized attachment patterns, they are all just on a spectrum and at the core of them is two things:

#1: The deep fear that you aren’t worthy of love, connection and happiness.

#2: And a lack of trust in vulnerability, connection and intimacy.

Now, intimacy doesn’t just mean the physical kind, it means the emotional and spiritual kind as well.

So what you need to do is have a specific beautiful memory of a positive attachment to someone from your past. 

Alternatively, get a song or a movie scene to watch or listen to every time you feel yourself sabotaging your career or your relationships.

Something that calms your nervous system and makes you feel more willing to connect with others.

Of course this needs to be personal to you, and you will know better than anyone which anchors will work to act as the “secure base” you need and the nurturing you weren’t reliably given.

Life is becoming more complex with the rapid changing technology. Stress levels among people are rising at alarming rates with the rising aspirations and expectations of the people.

Companies demand a lot from their employees to beat the stiff competition which is possible only by being innovative and creative in delivery of goods and services.  

In this process, employees undergo fatigue at the workplace resulting into higher stress levels.  Employees also want to prove and survive themselves by going extra mile.  

It is in this context, solitude is the need of the hour to break stress, anxiety monotony and boredom. 

What is Solitude?

People often confuse between solitude with loneliness.  In fact, it is not so.  Solitude is a state of being alone for a short-term where in there will not be any physical contact with others.  

It is like taking a break once in a week by totally avoiding the routine work.  It is also like taking a short leave for vacation.  

As people go for fasting without taking food for giving rest to the internal system, people also go for solitude for giving rest to the mind for sometime. 

Loneliness versus Solitude

Often loneliness and solitude are interchangeably used by people. However, there is a thin line separating these both.  Loneliness is a negative state whereas solitude is a positive state.  

Solitude helps in engaging oneself internally with a healthy thought process as a companion.  Loneliness reflects missing something in life. It represents isolation. 

Loneliness depletes mind and body while solitude restores.  Loneliness is bitterness while solitude is sweetness. To put it succinctly, solitude is chosen while loneliness is imposed.

  • It helps in recouping the lost energies.  Besides, it builds fresh energies, enhances creativity and innovation.

  • It replenishes your energies and helps you move further and forward with confidence and optimism.

Solitude is Fortitude

When you do routine things you get bored.  Then, it is time to go for solitude for self-analysis and introspection.  When you want to do things differently, it is time to go for solitude.  

People go to beaches and spend time in solitude in the sounds of sea waves as it provides solace and strengthens will-power. 

History reveals that several great leaders preferred solitude whenever they were in distress. In the epic Mahabharat, at the fag end of Kurukshetra battle, Duryodana underwent inside the water to remain calm for sometime and also to take in fresh energies.  

It was a kind of solitude.  Saints and sages go for solitude to search themselves internally.  They go to a serene place and enjoy in a state of solitariness.  Therefore, solitude is fortitude. 

People should spend some time in solitude everyday so as to stay healthy physically, mentally and spiritually.  It should be treated as an investment and expense of time.  

Few companies provide sabbatical leave to their employees who work for some period.  It helps them to unwind themselves and get back to work with recharged energies.  

To sum up, it is essential for individuals and institutions to go for solitude regularly keeping in view of the growing uncertainty and complexity due to rapid technology.

As we hit the halfway point in 2024, now is the perfect time to assess your life. Assess where you are regarding the goals you set, dreams you have, and intentions that you want to accomplish at this season of your life.

Most people get excited talking about their goals and the grand visions that they have for their lives. At the same time, most people avoid assessing their lives and taking responsibility for their decisions and the direction that their lives have taken. 

At this season of my life, I find myself greatly conflicted. I am making extraordinary progress in my life and achieving my goals; however, I have been challenged in so many ways this year to push my limits and honor the seed of my potential. 

I am writing this for every person that feels that they want more out of life but you have no clue how to get it. It’s time for you to stop playing small and dare to live a bigger life! 

1. You have to acknowledge your dissatisfaction

While many people will tell you that dissatisfaction is a bad thing, I want to challenge this assumption. Dissatisfaction is not a sign that something is wrong with your life. On the contrary, dissatisfaction is a divine prompting and invitation into a new dimension of living. 

Too many people allow dissatisfaction to discourage them. Personally, I have decided to allow dissatisfaction to direct me to the more that I know is beckoning me. It is not enough to be dissatisfied with your life. 

At some point, you have to acknowledge the dissatisfaction. Why is this so important? When you acknowledge your dissatisfaction with your life, you become aware of what is not working in your life and what needs to change. 

Dissatisfaction is an emotion but it is not permanent. Therefore, you are always in the driver’s seat of driving all changes in your life. Dissatisfaction is a soul alarm clock alerting you that something is broken in your life and needs your attention. 

What you are willing to acknowledge you are ultimately empowered to change. 

2. You must be willing to address the source of your dissatisfaction

It is one thing to acknowledge that you are dissatisfied with your life. On the other hand, it takes great courage and responsibility to address the source of the dissatisfaction in your life. 

For me, much of the dissatisfaction in my life was rooted in self-limiting beliefs and perceptions. In other words, it was the feelings of unworthiness, not feeling good enough, and feelings of insignificance that produced dissatisfaction in my life. 

Many times we lie to ourselves about our dissatisfaction and unhappiness. Deep down inside we know exactly what the source of our dissatisfaction is. Any place that you are unwilling to explore within yourself will always remain a place of enslavement. 

Your denial will not suppress the truth that is eating at your soul. At some point, you have to be willing to address self-limiting beliefs and perceptions, psychological constructs, and narratives that do not support who you were born to be. 

You will never advance beyond what you are willing to address.

3. You must decide that you want more for your life

After you have spent enough time ruminating on the things that are restricting your life, then you have to take it a step further and make a decision that you want more for your life. 

While the quest to discover what is broken about our lives can take many paths, the reality is that all the paths lead us to the conclusion that we want more for our lives and we will remain unfulfilled without the pursuit of more. 

Ultimately, every person must arrive at the non-negotiable decision that they want more for their life. This is one of the most empowering decisions we can ever make. The moment a decision is made your destiny is affected forever. 

As a highly respected thought leader, my intention is always to arrive people at empowered decisions. Why is that? Empowered decisions are a catalyst to freedom and a fulfilling life. There is nothing more miserable than living stuck and stagnant. You should never feel guilty for desiring to grow and wanting more for your life. More is not about greed and materialism. 

Over twenty years ago I discovered that more is about growth, meaning, and fulfillment. I’ve yet to meet a single person who does not desire to live a more fulfilling life. 

Our fulfillment does not come from the accumulation of things. Our fulfillment comes from awakening to the treasures within us. 

4. You must audaciously pursue your potential

As a human potential specialist, I have empowered leaders all around the world to unlock their greatest potential. However, before you can ever unlock your potential you must first recognize your potential. 

To recognize your potential requires you to have a clear vision for your life. As you pursue your vision, you will begin to unlock your potential and discover capacity and resources that you never knew you possessed. 

If you really want to experience life at its best, then I challenge you to stop living in pursuit of titles, accolades, and riches. Instead, I challenge you to live your life in pursuit of your greatest potential. 

When I dared to audaciously pursue my potential, I accessed new ways of thinking, new ways of living, and unlimited possibilities. It’s a travesty to die with treasures in you that were never discovered, solutions that were never accessed, and ideas that could have radically changed the world. 

When you pursue your potential there are no regrets. The pursuit of your potential is how you become who you were born to be.

John Dewey coined the concept “reflective thought” in 1910 in his work captioned How We Think, for Teachers.  He defines reflective thinking as “Active, persistent, and careful consideration of any belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the grounds that support it and the further conclusion to which it tends” (Dewey,1933). 

However, the concept has undergone a lot of modifications over some time.  RT sounds like a thinking chair—a practice by John C. Maxwell that allows thinking through silently in clearing the clutter and making decisions. 

Reflective thinking is reflecting on what you do for your progress.  It polishes your approach to reach your goals faster.  It paves the way for your success.  It is one of the ingredients for your smart work. 

Reflective thinking is beyond introspection.  It involves analyzing the current trends and patterns in the mind. It streamlines your mind by removing irrelevant and outdated ideas and insights thus allowing more space to accept and accommodate new ones.  

It is like deleting the waste files and replacing them with wanted files in any computer system. 

It provides breathing space to your mind.  As people find it hard to breathe properly due to pressures, they find it hard to think as well.  Therefore, reflective thinking is an effective tool for reflecting and thinking through new ideas.  

It enhances your creativity.  There is tremendous potential in this concept to utilize your vast human potential.

Advantages of reflection

If people spend a little time in reflective thinking they can find their personal and professional lives to be more meaningful and productive. At times people pursue routine activities without taking stock of the situation resulting in outdated practices and ending up nowhere. 

Here are some advantages of reflective thinking. 

  • Reflection makes life meaningful.  We get out of outdated practices and habits.  
  • Reflection helps you analyze your areas of strengths and weaknesses. It helps you realize where you stand in terms of your performance. It provides you with the right feedback.  Like solitude, reflection helps you take stock of the situation. 
  • It provides you with growth opportunities. 
  • Whenever you face challenges you can adopt this tool to find appropriate ideas. 
  • It removes confusion and clutter from your mind thus providing you clarity in mind. 
  • It helps in problem-solving.
  • Above all, it manages your time effectively.

Hence, spend some time in solitude to reflect your mind. Your mind goes for self-introspection and reflects your thoughts effectively for behavioral changes. 

Daniel Patrick Forrester rightly refers to the importance of reflective thinking as follows: “It was said that Thomas Edison would often take his fishing rod, sit at the end of the pier, cast away, and then just sit there for hours. However, he would never put any bait on his hook. He didn’t want to catch any fish. What he wanted to do was to sit there uninterrupted, just reflecting on the issues of the day, on his work, or on whatever else came into his mind. He knew that if he looked as if he were fishing, no one would bother him, so he could reflect uninterrupted. All he wanted to do was catch ideas.”

Edison signed many pictures for friends and admirers filled with the visionaries’ advice. To one friend he said, “All things come to him who hustles while he waits. Your friend, Thomas Edison.” Therefore, it becomes clear that great people spend some time reflecting on their thoughts. 

Reflection and Information Overload

The invention of the internet led to information overload.  People think less and reflect less as a lot of information is available to them on a platter.  

They are often confused between what to choose and reject.  By the way, what do you mean by information overload?  Let us find out. 

The term ‘Information Overload‘ was coined by Alvin Toffler much before the internet revolution.  It is about giving excess information that clutters the human mind and confuses people. It prevents people from understanding the real content.  Sometimes it deviates from the main topic and area of interest.  

John C. Maxwell reveals in his book Success, “More new information has been produced in the last thirty years than in the previous five thousand.  A single weekday edition of the New York Times contains more information than most people in seventeenth-century England were likely to encounter in their lifetimes.” 

Reflection and Contribution

Reflection is beyond introspection.  It is an imaginative inquiry.  Everybody must reflect on how much difference is made to society.  It is talking to oneself and inner self.  How far an individual is useful to himself and others?  

What value is an individual adding? What difference does an individual make for others?  If everybody reflects then there will be all-round peace and prosperity universally.

Reflection paves the way for progress.  It paves the way for success. It breaks the traditional barriers and limitations.  It makes people stretch beyond their capabilities and competencies. It develops human potential.  It raises your dreams and aspirations.  It bridges the gap between aspirations and accomplishments. 

Reflection is a powerful tool for promoting human potential.

The human mind is a powerful device.  It has huge potential and man does not use it fully. Man must learn to use it properly.  Reflective thinking comes in handy in using the human mind and potential properly.  

In addition, clarity of mind is the key to success in the contemporary world. By reflective thinking, you remove clutter from your mind and that helps you simplify and overcome many obstacles in your life paving the way for your success.

Viktor Frankl wrote Man’s Search for Meaning long ago.  Now it is time again to search for meaning in one’s life by introspection, removing clutter, managing time, caring for your family and friends, and making a difference in this great human civilization.

People often confuse weak memory and poor recollection.  They complain of weak memory.  It is not a weak memory but a poor collection of information.  How sad it is when you cannot recall the name of a person you met in the past.

What impression does it convey to another person when you regrettably say that you forgot his name?

In this busy and competitive world people forget telephone numbers, passwords, and PINs.  It not only stops the work but also irritates not remembering.  Sometimes, you curse yourself for not remembering the things.

There are several tools and techniques by which you can improve your memory.  It is not a big challenge but it requires a little more concentration and effort. The human brain is highly complex.  You must know how to make use of it to improve your memory.  

In this context, it is desirable to know briefly about memory. 

What is Memory?

Memory is a mental activity where in stored information is recalled and retrieved as and when required.  It is divided into two types: short-term and long-term. In short-term memory, the information is stored for a few seconds or minutes. 

In contrast, in long-term memory, the information is stored for a longer duration.  When people listen to others, they feed in their memory automatically whether to register for short-term or long-term depending on the importance of information.

Techniques to improve your memory

  • Open up your mind and instruct to encode new information.  
  • Concentration is the key to good memory.  Explore ways to enhance your concentration.  
  • Stay focused on one thing at a time.  Don’t go for multitasking.  Whenever you feel that the information is important you need to put in more effort and concentration so that you can remember well.  
  • Avoid noises, interruptions, and external disturbances while listening.
  • Do things slowly as it reinforces your memory.  
  • Call people by names when introduced.  For instance, “It is my pleasure to meet you, Robert”.  Associate names of the people with well-known people you have already registered in your mind for better retention.  Create visual pictures in your mind.
  • When you speak louder you can remember better as you listen to your voice. Maintain a diary to jot down the important information.  
  • Prioritize the information while receiving it.  It helps in retaining the important information.  Instead of typing the information, you may write with your hand as the muscular memory will be activated resulting in storing the information.  
  • There are several games on television and online to enhance your memory.  Playing the same will prove to be helpful.  
  • Assimilate the information rather than reading the content for the sake of reading. It aids your memory.   
  • If you find it difficult to memorize large content, you can break it into small parts.  Memorize each small part and mentally compile the same for final memorization.  
  • Relate the information with your real live events through pictorial visualization as it helps in recollection.  
  • Research reveals that humans can remember between 5 to 9 items at a time.  If you can break the information between 5 to 9 items then it becomes easy for you to remember and recollect.  
  • People have a natural tendency to remember rhymes and rhythms.  Therefore, convert your content accordingly for effective memory.  
  • Go to bed without overly worried about anything. If you go to bed thinking about the problems then you get better solutions by the next day morning.  
  • Relax your mind when blocked with memory recall.  Engage your mind on other issues.  To your surprise, you will recall whatever you wanted as your brain searches for the information.  
  • Avoid anxiety and stress as it blocks your memory.  Adopt relaxation techniques.
  • Make use of your inner dialogue.  Every individual is involved in self-talk which is also known as inner dialogue.  Repeated conversation within your mind reinforces and aids your memory.  
  • When you talk about new concepts with others, it not only improves your communication skills but also aids in memorizing complicated information.  
  • The way you exercise your body you should exercise your memory muscles.
  • Finally, eat nutritious food as it keeps your body and mind healthy. It aids in effective memory.

Memory Techniques for Students

  1. Students should review the information they receive in the classroom within a day so that they can retain the same effectively. Jotting down the points taught during the class by the teacher helps them to review and revise immediately. 
  2. Students should focus on the keywords while reading the content as it helps them in analyzing, understanding, and memorizing the content.  Read the content repeatedly if possible. 
  3. Develop your mnemonic device wherein the first letters of each word have to be framed as a word for better recalling. It helps students, especially during examinations. 
  4. Use highlighters and colored pens while reading the text and apply the same depending on the importance and priority of the content.  It helps in saving time and also in better memory.
  5. Find out what kind of senses would be comfortable and ideal for you and exploit the same for better memory.

People often look for elevating themselves rather than elevating others by focusing on their strengths and merits.  It is unfortunate to note. People have become so busy that they don’t find time to care for others.

The world has become ruthless with cutthroat competition. It is a rat race where no one cares about others.  That is the current scenario globally.

God blessed us with life.  If everyone thinks of contributing something to others by whatever means, most of the problems will be resolved and people feel better, bigger and greater.  

However, very few people have the time to think along those lines as they don’t find to think through.

Where will the world go?  Who will save the world and the people?  It is time to think through and do something for others to make a difference.

Make a habit of spending some time daily to listen to people and empathize with them.  It comforts them. If possible, observe people around you and say a few good things and motivate them. Who knows the man whom you motivate might be at the brink of disaster.  

Making others feel important can change the world

Here is a short story of making others feel more important and saving lives. There was a young woman who was walking in the street.  A man who was passing by saw the woman, stopped her shook her hand, and said, “Hi young woman! Where are you going?  You look so beautiful! Have a great day!”  

The woman was shocked at the stranger who shook her hand with warmth and greeted her with a great smile saying that she was looking great.  She was coming back from the medical store with a small bottle in her hand wrapped with a cover.  She was in a great depression as her boyfriend cheated on her and married something another woman.  

She felt let down and depressed.  She lost all her confidence and felt inferior that she was not looking and probably that led her boyfriend to dump her and search for some other woman.  

During the great depression, she went to a medical store to buy poison to end her life.  When she was going back after buying a small bottle of poison, the stranger shook her hand, praised her beauty, and wished her a great day. 

Then she went to her home and looked in the mirror whether she was looking beautiful.  She looked at the mirror several times and began smiling by thinking, “Yes, I am beautiful! What the stranger said was right.  My deserted boyfriend is not lucky enough to enjoy my beauty and she gradually developed confidence.” 

Finally, she threw away the bottle containing poison and she went on to build a great career with a good man and became an international celebrity.   

This story reveals the importance of making others feel important thus saving them from the brink of committing suicide.  We don’t know how much difference we make by praising and elevating others.  

It is essential to appreciate and elevate others. Learn to look at the similarities rather than differences.  Learn to look at the strengths rather than weaknesses because what goes around will come back to you.

Here are a few nuggets to make others feel more important. 

  • Listen to the other person with the right body language.  Step into the shoes and empathize.  Nod in agreement appropriately.  If the other person is in distress don’t disturb and allow him/her to ventilate problems.  Then present your solutions. 
  • When a person achieves something praise liberally. But be specific and objective to avoid sounding like a flattery. 
  • Identify the key strengths of people and praise them whenever and wherever possible. 
  • Adopt the mirroring technique where you need to convert your body language as per the other person as it helps in connecting with the other person making him/her feel comfortable and creating a common ground. 
  • Remember the fact that people have different needs, egos, emotions, and feelings.  You cannot adopt a fixed approach or style to touch them. You need to identify each person’s situation and issue to touch and strike an emotional chord with them. 
  • Above all, always handhold others. 

Remember, it takes several years to build relations but takes a few seconds to break it.  Hence, present a positive attitude and praise and make others feel more important to touch and connect with them emotionally and successfully. 

People might pose a question such as “At a time when people don’t find time for themselves how can they find time for their family and friends and society?”  Yes! It is true.  

As we have responsibility towards our children we have equal responsibility towards of future generations for passing on society’s values and virtues.  Hence, it is time for us to find time to think, act, and make a difference for others to take this human civilization to greater heights of glory not in terms of material but in ideals and ideas.

Due to the rapid growth in technology, people are often in the rat race to compete with others little realizing that they are losing so much or so little. People often search for stones by leaving gems at home.

People often think that they will be happy at a later stage if they work hard today.  However, there is no guarantee of happiness at a later stage.  

In this context, I would like to discuss Ben-Shahar’s Happiness Model which is thought-provoking for busy people to take a look at and find meaning in their lives.  

Dr. Tal Ben-Shahar is the author of several books and a specialist in “Positive Psychology.” He is the author of various books such as The Pursuit of Perfect: How to Stop Chasing Perfection and Start Living a Richer, Happier Life and Happier: Learn the Secrets to Daily Joy and Lasting Fulfillment.  

He has designed a Happiness Model which is also known as “The Hamburger Model”.  It contains four quadrants representing Nihilism, Hedonism, Rat Race, and Happiness.  

Here is the information taken from his book ‘Happier’ to bring awareness about this model for the benefit of readers. 

Ben-Shahar’s Happiness Model

Nihilism: Nihilism falls in the bottom left-hand quadrant of the Happiness Model. Nihilists are people who have given up hope of finding meaning in life. They don’t enjoy any present happiness, nor do they have any sense of purpose or hope for the future. As a result, they’re “resigned to their fate.”  

Hedonism: Hedonism falls in the lower right-hand quadrant of the model.  Hedonists focus on present happiness only, and give little thought to future consequences. They may think that “working hard” is painful and tedious, and may avoid this.  As a result, hedonists feel unchallenged and are often unfulfilled.

Rat Race: The Rat Race falls in the upper left-hand quadrant of the model. In the Rat Race, we detrimentally put off present happiness in the hope of some future benefit.  This archetype is likely the most familiar to many of us. Here, people constantly pursue goals that they think will make them happy. When those goals are achieved, however, a new goal almost immediately takes its place. While Rat Racers may experience brief flashes of satisfaction when they achieve goals, any thought of present happiness is then quickly pushed to the side.

Happiness: The Happiness archetype falls in the upper right quadrant of the model. This archetype reflects a good balance between present happiness and future benefits.

Precisely, the Happiness Model defines four happiness archetypes as follows: 

  1. Nihilism – Nihilists have lost the joy in life. They derive no present pleasure in their work or life and expect no future benefits or rewards. They’ve “given up.”
  2. Hedonism – Hedonists live for the moment. They pursue pleasure and an easy life and give little or no thought to future consequences and plans. 
  3. Rat Racing – The Rat Race archetype often sacrifices current pleasures and benefits in anticipation of some future reward. 
  4. Happiness – True happiness is achieved when there is a perfect balance between present pleasure and future benefits. 

“Happiness grows less from the passive experience of desirable circumstances than from involvement in valued activities and progress toward one’s goals.” — Tal Ben-Shahar

Current Global Scenario

It is rightly said that a young person looks at the future; the middle-aged person looks at the present while the old-aged person looks at the past.  However, in the cut-throat competitive world young, middle-aged, and old are running behind something for which they don’t have any clarity.  

The present position is such that parents don’t have time to spend with their children.  As a result, children find emotional gaps and search elsewhere for the same. Sometimes the crimes shoot up among the children and teenagers as parents don’t find time to guide and groom them. 

Old people are uncared by children as the latter are busy with their survival and success.

We are living in a competitive world where people often intend to outsmart others without realizing any meaning in life. God gave us life.  

We must learn to make use of the most by striking a balance between pressure and pleasure, between rapidity and slowness. Otherwise, there is no meaning to life.

Happiness is a state of mind.  It comes in any way such as through wealth, knowledge, power, prestige, or love. However, it depends on the priority of the person.   

People often think that happiness is an end but the fact is that happiness is a means. People struggle and sacrifice throughout their life journey to think about the destination of happiness. 

True happiness lies in the journey, not in the destination. 

It is essential to strike the balance between today and tomorrow.  Several books have come up learning to live in the present rather than getting bogged down about the past and over anxious about the future.  

Hence, let us learn to live in the present rather than being worried about the past that cannot be changed and concerned about the future that can not be predicted. 

Learn to strike a balance between the past, present, and future and also between the pressure and pleasure to find meaning in your life.

Self-confidence is an essential inner quality in any career, but in many areas (for example, in tech where I work) just because you are a woman, your abilities might be questioned before you even start your job.

I used to hate interviews; they really scared me. To help me get through them with less fear, I started picturing the way one of my colleagues handled interviews and pressure in general. I thought about how he responded to questions he didn’t know the answer to, how he stayed calm even when he felt like the interview wasn’t going well, and how he stayed positive and poised even when he felt he was being treated poorly. I’d mentally go through the whole interview at home, imagining myself displaying that same cool demeanor.

What did I learn from this and how do you go about building self-confidence and faking it until you become more brave? Everyone experiences a lack of self-confidence now and then, but for the sake of your career, it’s important to consciously work on this trait.

The Importance of Self-Confidence

Self-confidence leads to better performance, as well as good feelings about yourself and what you can achieve.

When you lack self-confidence, you can fall into traps that can hold you back. For example, when you’re a junior and learning at a company, you might get into the habit of taking the blame when things go wrong. As a result, you may start thinking you’re stupid or not capable of handling the position. But it’s not on you. You’re not supposed to understand everything from the beginning.

A lack of self-confidence can also lead you to be too modest and hide your success or to let someone else take credit. You might think that your managers will see what you’re doing and promote you without you speaking up, but it usually doesn’t work that way. You might feel too shy to do your own PR and hope a coworker will notice and spread the word. You can’t rely on that either. If you aren’t naturally confident, you need to fake it by sharing your successes, and doing your own PR.

At the same time, self-confidence doesn’t mean you never make mistakes. Everyone does, no matter how confident they are or how long they’ve been in their career. Don’t get stuck on being perfect. Remember: better done than perfect.

Building Self-Confidence

Lack of confidence is the number one issue I see in the women I mentor. The good news is that self-confidence can be learned. Overcoming self-doubts happens when you honestly and truthfully assess your abilities and work on areas that need improvement.

Here are ten tips to get you started:

  1. Work on building self-confidence by reading a self-help book or by getting help from another person. Find a therapist to analyze your negative patterns. Get a coach to help you practice being brave. Find what triggers your lack of confidence and the beliefs that limit you. For example, you might think, “I am not smart enough,” or “I didn’t finish my project on time, so I am not a competent worker.” Once you recognize these thought patterns, you can work through them in therapy, coaching, or speaking with other women. Stop yourself when you notice these negative thoughts, and ask yourself what you would tell a friend who spoke to herself in this harsh way. Also, look at the things you say to yourself and evaluate whether or not they’re true. Maybe you tell yourself you’re too slow at producing work, but when you reflect, you realize you deliver a good job consistently. If it helps, write down the truth about your skills so you remember next time self-doubt creeps in.
  2. Try things you don’t think you can do. Start a blog. Give a lecture. Present at a conference. Try something that is harder than your current skill level. You might think something like speaking at a conference takes a lot of self-confidence, but it’s really a matter of preparation and practice. Building diverse professional skills is one of the best ways to build confidence in your abilities.
  3. Engage in meetings even when you don’t feel 100 percent sure about the topic. Ask questions. Share your perspective. The more you do it, the more confident you’ll become.
  4. Even if you fail when you take a risk, learn from that experience. Separate yourself from failure. You did something, and it failed. You are not a failure. Learn from the situation and then move on.
  5. Believe you’re worthy of a promotion. Aim high. Ask yourself what you need to do to make it to that next position. Look at the steps and start taking them.
  6. Look for a supportive community. Find a buddy within your team, someone you can learn from in those areas where your current knowledge and skills are limited.
  7. Ask people who appreciate you to encourage you. Find people who can help you calm down when you’re feeling nervous, like before a big presentation. When you share how you’re feeling, these friends can show you how valuable you truly are.
  8. Change your goals. If you’re worried about finding a new job, change the goal from “finding a new job” to “getting as many interviews as possible.” If you succeed in getting interviews, then you’ve already won. Eventually you will get a job.
  9. If you have a huge task, break it down to small tasks. Small steps are usually easier to handle, practically and emotionally, and little wins can boost your confidence.
  10. When you’re scared, imagine someone who has confidence— just as I did when I was scared to interview. Envision this person doing what you need to do. How does she handle herself? How does she speak? Notice the small details and then try to imitate them in your own situation.

Fake It and You’ll Make It

Don’t wait until you have confidence to do big, meaningful things. Instead, set big goals and work toward them. It’s time to revise the old refrain “fake it till you make it, and commit to the idea that when it comes to building self-confidence and getting the career you dream of, the catchphrase is “fake it and you’ll make it!”

Human potential, what we’re emotionally capable of, is infinite.

The only restrictions to expanding into more and more of our potential are self-imposed. They’re imaginary boundaries constructed by our minds. 

Often, these boundaries are beautifully crafted machinations of our imagination that feel utterly true and impenetrable. 

The Role of Self-Image in Unlocking Potential

Expanding into our potential is a function of:

  • Our self-image
  • Our level of self-trust
  • Our level of self-worth
  • Our level of self-efficacy

Our willingness to question, explore, and travel beyond our imaginary boundaries. 

Our potential isn’t something “out there” we chase and catch; it resides within and is something we can expand into. 

Nor does it require a herculean effort.

Facing Challenges: A Gateway to Transformation

When we face a challenge, regardless of its size and regardless of the outcome, we’ve evolved into someone new.

Because when we face a challenge, we’re walking directly into one of our personal edges (the imaginary boundaries).

An edge is an opportunity to walk away, to capitulate to fear and self-doubt, and, conversely, to move towards our fears and self-doubt. 

When we capitulate, we diminish. 

When we move forward, we expand. 

When we move towards, face, and emerge on the other side of a challenge, we’ve transformed into the individual who’s done the thing that seconds ago challenged us not to do the thing. 

This is a moment that can go to waste, or it can be leveraged to create the extraordinary. 

If we want to create the lives we dream of, we can’t allow ourselves to diminish these moments, as can be our tendency, due to more of our imaginary boundaries.  

We’re conditioned to stand in the shadows of our successes because to celebrate them is “cocky” or arrogant.

Our celebration needn’t be external, but it most certainly must be internal. 

We must celebrate ourselves and stand in our power, embracing that acknowledging ourselves is neither cocky nor arrogant. 

Plus, when we do this, we release the pleasure hormone dopamine, therefore training our minds to want to face more challenges, creating a powerful cycle. 

So when we face and emerge through challenges, we create a new iteration of ourselves and unlock a new existence.

Within that new existence are opportunities and possibilities that weren’t available to us before. 

The opportunities and possibilities were always there; they just weren’t available to us mentally and emotionally. 

It becomes a choice, and perhaps one of the most important choices of our lives, to seize those new opportunities and possibilities.

This will require us to create a new iteration of ourselves again, and the cycle continues.

Hence, our human potential is infinite.

One may think the next obvious question is, “How?” 

How do we expand into our infinite potential? What are the steps we must take?

How is critically important, but “Why?” creates the fuel to consistently face challenges and expand our lives. 

The “Why?” varies from person to person, but I believe the root of the “Why?” is universal.

As part of our shared human experience, we desire meaning. 

We want our lives to have meaning and purpose. It’s inherent to us and a part of us the way our hair is, whatever color it is. 

We don’t create meaningful lives by remaining in our status quo; we create meaningful lives by going within and understanding who we truly are and who we want to be. 

Crafting Your Personal Operating System

One of the ways we do this is by creating our own personal operating system.

There are three components to our own personal operating system:

Our core values, principles, and mantra for life. 

Core Values: These are our Northstar.

Principles: These are the basic tenets we abide by for how we want to show up in the world.

Mantra: This single sentence captures the essence of how you want to live and how you show up. 

What do we stand for, and what governs our decisions and choices. Because our lives are the aggregate of our decisions and choices (see above).

Life becomes crystal clear when we establish and embody our personal operating system.

Our priorities change, and we make more expansive choices.

Our “Why?” and our “How?” become interwoven

Through this interweaving, we find the strength to continually expand into our potential. 

When we expand our potential, we cultivate the meaning and purpose we’ve always longed for.
